OK Zimbabwe Halts Workers’ Salaries as Corporate Rescue Measures Intensify

Written by on May 26, 2026

Retail giant OK Zimbabwe Limited has indefinitely suspended salaries and wages for all employees with immediate effect in a dramatic move aimed at stabilising operations as the company battles mounting financial challenges under corporate rescue proceedings.

The salary freeze, approved by the retailer’s Joint Works Council during a meeting held on 22 May 2026, is part of a broader restructuring strategy designed to preserve business continuity and restore financial stability at one of Zimbabwe’s largest supermarket chains.

Under the resolution, payroll processing has been suspended beginning May 2026 and will remain on hold until further notice or until the company records improved business performance.

The development comes months after OK Zimbabwe voluntarily entered corporate rescue proceedings on 24 February 2026, in terms of the Insolvency Act, following a board resolution passed a day earlier to seek legal protection and facilitate business recovery efforts.

Corporate restructuring specialist Bulisa Mbano of [Grant Thornton Zimbabwe](https://www.grantthornton.co.zw?utm_source=chatgpt.com) was appointed Corporate Rescue Practitioner to oversee the retailer’s turnaround process and guide efforts to restore operational viability.

Company officials say the intervention is necessary to address ongoing financial strain and improve long-term sustainability amid difficult trading conditions affecting the retail sector.

Meanwhile, the Joint Works Council has maintained that all actions taken during the rescue process will be implemented in line with labour laws, although the suspension of salaries is expected to heighten anxiety among workers and their families already grappling with economic pressures.

The move signals a critical turning point for OK Zimbabwe, with industry observers closely monitoring whether the once-dominant retail brand can successfully navigate its financial crisis and reclaim stability in an increasingly competitive market.
