Superintendent Gambiza Leads Heroes Holiday Road Safety Campaign in Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls – Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Superintendent Gambiza has called for heightened road safety awareness ahead of the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, urging motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution during the busy travel period.

Speaking during the official launch of the Heroes Holiday Safety Traffic Campaign in Victoria Falls, Superintendent Gambiza emphasized the importance of responsible road usage, noting that the festive period often records a surge in traffic volumes and, consequently, road accidents. Audio from the campaign and video footage from the operation highlighted ongoing enforcement efforts, including a case where one driver was stopped and searched and found to have his vehicle overloaded. The driver was fined on the spot as part of strict measures to ensure compliance.

He highlighted that the campaign aims to reduce road traffic accidents through increased police visibility, public education, and strict enforcement of traffic laws. Motorists were urged to adhere to speed limits, avoid reckless driving, and ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on long-distance journeys. Drivers were further advised against overloading vehicles and reminded to regularly check that their vehicles are fit for the road.

Superintendent Gambiza also warned against driving under the influence of alcohol, describing it as one of the leading causes of fatal accidents. He encouraged drivers to plan their trips in advance and take regular breaks to avoid fatigue.

Pedestrians and public transport operators were also reminded of their role in ensuring road safety. Kombi and bus operators were urged to avoid overloading and to respect designated pick-up and drop-off points.

“We all have a role to play in saving lives on our roads. Let us work together to ensure that everyone reaches their destinations safely during this Heroes holiday,” said Superintendent Gambiza.

The ZRP has since deployed traffic officers along major highways and within urban centres to monitor compliance and respond swiftly to emergencies.

The Heroes Holiday Safety Traffic Campaign forms part of a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting safer roads and reducing fatalities during peak travel periods.
