The Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified its nationwide crackdown on stock theft and illegal meat trading, resulting in the arrest of more than 3,400 suspects during a major countrywide operation.
Police said the operation, code-named “Batai Mbavha Dzemombe Nembudzi / Flash Out Cattle and Goat Rustlers,” was launched on April 28, 2026, as part of efforts to dismantle organised stock theft syndicates and protect Zimbabwe’s livestock sector.
According to the ZRP, by May 9 authorities had arrested 415 suspects directly linked to stock theft offences, while a further 2,997 individuals were apprehended for related crimes including operating unlicensed butcheries, illegal meat vending, and failure to produce valid stock movement permits and livestock registers.
The operation also led to the closure of 205 butcheries and 125 food outlets allegedly found to be operating in violation of public health and veterinary regulations.
Police confirmed that livestock and poultry recovered during the ongoing exercise include 43 cattle, 35 goats, 13 donkeys, one pig, and 54 chickens believed to have been stolen or illegally traded.
The ZRP said patrols, inspections, roadblocks, and compliance checks have now been intensified across the country to strengthen surveillance and disrupt criminal networks involved in stock theft and illegal meat distribution.
Authorities noted that the operation is not only targeting livestock rustling syndicates but also ensuring that meat products sold to consumers comply with required health, veterinary, and food safety standards.
Police also commended members of the public for cooperating with law enforcement agencies through the provision of information that has assisted ongoing investigations and arrests.
Stock theft remains a major challenge affecting rural livelihoods, food security, and agricultural productivity, with Government and security agencies continuing to prioritise measures aimed at safeguarding farmers and strengthening confidence within the livestock industry.
