Written by on December 20, 2024

Zimbabwe’s tobacco industry is advancing its commitment to environmental sustainability with the reintroduction of Natural Air-Cured Tobacco, a move expected to significantly reduce its carbon footprint.

In a recent statement, the Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) announced that this initiative will help decrease greenhouse gas emissions by eliminating the use of firewood for curing tobacco.

Currently, TIMB is collaborating with 140 small-scale farmers in Mangwe, who are transplanting 90 hectares of Natural Air-Cured Tobacco. This shift not only aligns with global sustainability efforts but also promises to cut production costs from USD 900 per hectare, making tobacco farming more economically viable for growers.

The initiative reflects the industry’s evolving focus on balancing profitability with environmental stewardship. As Zimbabwe’s tobacco sector transitions towards greener practices, it sets an inspiring example for other industries, showcasing that economic growth can coexist with environmental sustainability.

This milestone reaffirms Zimbabwe’s position as a leader in sustainable agricultural practices, paving the way for a healthier and more sustainable future.
