A Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) ranger, Hali Mabuya, 39, has been granted $200 bail after allegedly killing and mutilating three lions in Hwange National Park.
Mabuya, stationed at Mtshibi Camp, appeared before Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Naison Chivhayo, who imposed conditions requiring him to reside in Mbundane, Bulawayo, report bi-weekly to Nkulumane Police Station, and surrender his travel documents.
Mabuya is facing charges of unlawful hunting and possession of ammunition without a firearm certificate, in violation of the Parks and Wildlife Act and the Firearms Act.
Investigators linked him to the incident after he reportedly asked a colleague to alter records detailing the use of his rifle. Authorities recovered a Point 458 service rifle and 52 live rounds from him, with 30 rounds unaccounted for by his employer.
The remains of two female lions and one male lion, missing their heads and paws, were discovered at Nyamandlovu Pan, approximately 7 km from the main gate of Hwange National Park.
