“Zimbabwe’s Sugar Supply Secure Despite Drought”, Says Industry Association

Written by on August 9, 2024

The Zimbabwe Sugar Association (ZSA) has assured consumers that the country’s sugar supply is secure, despite the current drought affecting other agricultural crops.

In a recent statement the ZSA said that the sugar currently on sale was produced from the previous milling season, which ended in December 2023. That season’s good rainfall has ensured that major dams supplying water for sugarcane irrigation in the Lowveld have sufficient water to last at least two seasons.

The association noted that sugarcane is a 12-month crop grown under irrigation in Zimbabwe, making it less vulnerable to drought. With the current milling season underway, the industry has sufficient stocks of brown, white, and manufacturer’s grade sugar to meet local demand.

This assurance comes as a relief to consumers and industries reliant on sugar, as the El Nino-induced drought has raised concerns about food security in the country.
