Zimbabwe’s Exports to China Surge to Record US$1.36 Billion

Written by on July 14, 2026

Zimbabwe’s exports to China have reached a record US$1.36 billion in 2025, marking a significant increase from US$256 million in 2021 and underscoring the strengthening trade ties between the two countries.

According to ZimTrade, the impressive growth reflects rising demand for Zimbabwean products in one of the world’s largest markets, creating new opportunities for local producers and exporters.

Tobacco continues to dominate Zimbabwe’s export portfolio to China, maintaining its position as the country’s leading export commodity. However, the export basket is becoming increasingly diversified, with products such as salt, sulphur, stone, lime and cement registering notable growth. Emerging exports including edible fruits, nuts, copper, leather and cosmetics are also gaining traction in the Chinese market.

ZimTrade attributes the export boom largely to China’s enhanced Green Channel 2.0 initiative, which has eased market access for African exporters through streamlined approval procedures and zero-tariff treatment for qualifying agricultural and food products.

The development is expected to strengthen Zimbabwe’s export earnings while supporting the country’s broader drive towards value addition, industrialisation and market diversification.

Despite the opportunities, ZimTrade has urged exporters to ensure compliance with China’s import regulations, including Rules of Origin requirements, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, and product registration standards, in order to fully capitalise on the expanded market access.

The record export performance highlights the growing importance of the Chinese market to Zimbabwe’s economy and signals the potential for further growth as local companies expand their presence in Asia’s largest consumer market.
