Many Zimbabweans residing in South Africa are finding it difficult to afford the new e-passport, which costs $250, despite their eagerness to obtain one. Although the Zimbabwean consulate introduced an emergency e-passport initiative to streamline the process, the high cost remains a significant barrier for those trying to comply.
In response, the Zimbabwean community in South Africa has launched a petition calling on the government to review and reduce the $250 fee.
They argue that the cost is too high and excludes many from accessing essential documentation.
Meanwhile, Chairperson of the Zimbabwean Community in South Africa,Mr Nqabutho Mabhena expressed his support for the petition, highlighting that the passport fee is too high compared to South Africa and neighboring countries.
He urged Zimbabweans worldwide to sign the petition to push for a reduction in the ePassport fee.
