Harare, Zimbabwe – The annual King’s Birthday Party in Harare this week served as a vibrant platform to underscore the deepening partnership between Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom, celebrating not only diplomatic ties but also the rich tapestry of people-to-people connections.
The event, hosted by the British Embassy, brought together a diverse group of dignitaries, officials, and esteemed guests, all eager to mark the occasion and reflect on the collaborative achievements between the two nations.
The evening’s proceedings were skillfully managed by the Master of Ceremonies, Ambassador Pete Vowles who set a warm and celebratory tone. Among the distinguished guests was the Guest of Honour, Hon. Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndlovu, representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade; and Lord Collins of Highbury, Africa Minister and the Under Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
A highlight of the celebrations was the performance of the national anthems by Linda, who recently won the Golden Buzzer Award on Britain’s Got Talent. Her exceptional talent, was met with heartfelt appreciation.
The core message of the evening revolved around the robust and evolving relationship between Zimbabweans in Britain and Britons in Zimbabwe. As the Master of Ceremonies eloquently put it, “At their best, these relationships are 2-way: Brits and Zimbabweans working together, learning together, exchanging ideas.” This sentiment was powerfully encapsulated in the Shona proverb: “Ruwoko rumwe haru-takure chirongo pamusoro,” meaning “One hand alone cannot raise the water pot onto the head.” This proverb, it was noted, perfectly summarizes how both countries and their people achieve most when they work together.
The success of the partnership was further amplified by acknowledgments of various contributors. Thanks were extended to friends and colleagues in the Government of Zimbabwe, members of civil society, and politicians across the political spectrum for their collaborative efforts.
The event’s sponsors – Minerva Alliance Health, Ethiopian Airlines, EcoBank, ColdChain/ineos, ABC Auctions, and The Gray Apartments – were also commended for their crucial role in supporting UK trade, development, health, logistics, and innovation.
The festive atmosphere was enhanced by the delightful array of British-themed food and drinks, including Cornish pastries, English sausage rolls, Welsh cakes, Scottish shortbread, and Northern Irish soda bread, creating a taste of home for many.
The British Embassodor also expressed gratitude to the musicians, particularly the incredible Churchill Pipe Band and St George’s Marimba band, for their captivating performances.
