Zimbabwe is set to re-sentence all death row inmates in a landmark move towards aligning its justice system with international human rights standards.
Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Vimbai Nyemba, announced that these inmates will be eligible for retrial in the High Court, with alternative sentences such as life imprisonment considered.
This decision follows the recent abolition of the death penalty and aims to promote a more humane approach to punishment. Nyemba emphasized the importance of engaging with stakeholders to ensure that inmates’ rights are respected during the process.
The development is expected to reshape Zimbabwe’s legal landscape and reinforce its commitment to upholding human rights.
