The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) has revealed that they are working to introduce a new parole system in 2025.
In a statement,ZPCS highlighted that they are working on improving the prison systems to match world standards. For this to happen, prison congestion needs to be reduced from 21 000 inmates in prisons across the country to 17 000 inmates, which is the proper carrying capacity.
The new system is at the final stage of trials and will be initiated in early 2025. The new parole system will bet current inmates to determine who is most deserving of being paroled early. The vetting will be approved by the president, state parole board, and the ministry responsible for prisons and correctional services.
The system aims to help reduce the prison population, reducing inmates on inmates’ violence caused by overcrowding in prisons.
