Written by on June 26, 2025

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has launched the End Learning Poverty in Education Campaign, a continental initiative driven by the African Union with support from UNICEF.

The campaign seeks to ensure that every child acquires essential literacy and numeracy skills, with a particular focus on reading and writing at early learning levels.

Speaking at the launch, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Hon. Torerai Moyo, acknowledged the urgency of addressing learning poverty, a widespread challenge impacting millions of children across Africa.

He noted that the situation in Zimbabwe is equally concerning, with the Zimbabwe Early Learning Assessment (ZELA 2024) revealing that 25% of Grade 3 learners are unable to read and write proficiently.

The Minister called for targeted interventions to improve foundational learning outcomes, stressing the need for collaborative efforts at both national and continental levels to close the learning gap.
