At the recent United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Open Debate, Ambassador Taonga Mushayavanhu, Zimbabwe’s Permanent Representative to the UN, called for genuine multilateralism, UNSC reform, and a fairer global governance system.
The Ambassador emphasized that multilateralism has historically been crucial in preventing conflicts, supporting decolonization, advancing global development, and safeguarding human rights. However, he argued that the current system is outdated and fails to reflect modern global realities.
In his address, Ambassador Mushayavanhu highlighted the potential of the “Pact of the Future” to reshape global governance and address pressing global challenges. He also condemned unilateral coercive measures, stating that they violate national sovereignty, hinder economic growth, and harm ordinary citizens.
He called for the expansion of the Security Council’s membership to include representation from Africa and the developing world, which he said would increase the Council’s legitimacy and effectiveness. Furthermore, he advocated for an end to the misuse of veto power and urged the Security Council to act with credibility, fairness, and efficiency in responding to global crises.
