Zimbabwe Accelerates Drive Towards Fertiliser Self-Sufficiency Through Local Manufacturing

Written by on June 28, 2026

Zimbabwe is intensifying efforts to attain fertiliser self-sufficiency through expanded local manufacturing, a strategic move aimed at reducing import dependence, strengthening food security and driving industrial growth.

At the centre of the initiative is the construction of a state-of-the-art fertiliser manufacturing plant in Norton, where specialised equipment sourced from China is currently being delivered ahead of installation and commissioning.

The project gained momentum following a recent visit to China by Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube, who toured facilities assembling the equipment destined for Zimbabwe. The plant is being developed by Wintrue Holdings in partnership with Sunny Yifeng as part of broader efforts to boost domestic production capacity.

Government says the new facility will play a critical role in increasing the availability of locally produced fertiliser, enhancing support for the agricultural sector while reducing the country’s import bill.

Beyond agriculture, the investment is expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate growth across key sectors of the economy, including manufacturing, transport, logistics and chemical processing.

Authorities are optimistic that the ongoing investments will enable Zimbabwe to achieve fertiliser self-sufficiency within the next three years, positioning the country to meet domestic demand sustainably and strengthen resilience within the agricultural value chain.

In the longer term, Government envisions Zimbabwe emerging as a regional fertiliser production hub, with surplus output earmarked for export markets across Southern Africa, creating new revenue streams and contributing to economic transformation.
