ZIFA Hands Down Suspensions to Referees for Substandard Officiating

Written by on May 16, 2025

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has taken decisive action against three match officials following reviews of their performances in recent Premier Soccer League (PSL) fixtures.

Citing performances that fell below the expected standards for top-tier matches, ZIFA has announced suspensions for the referees involved.

Referee Lawrence Zimondi has been suspended from officiating PSL matches for four weeks, covering Matchdays 11 through 14. This decision stems from substandard officiating in two specific games which included the high-profile clash between Highlanders and CAPS United on 13 April 2025, at Barbourfields Stadium, and the match between Ngezi Platinum and Yadah played on 30 April 2025, at Baobab Stadium.

Referee Nelson Meke has also been handed a four-week suspension, covering the same period from Matchday 11 to 14. This suspension is a result of a poor performance during the Scotland versus Herentals match played on May 1, 2025, at Rufaro Stadium.

The longest suspension has been given to Referee Tichaona Mbire, who will be sidelined for six weeks, from Matchday 11 to 16. This action follows an unsatisfactory performance during the MWOS versus Manica Diamonds fixture held on 1 May 2025, at Ngoni Stadium.

These suspensions underscore ZIFA’s commitment to maintaining high officiating standards in the Premier Soccer League and ensuring fair play throughout the competition.
