ZERA hikes LPG price again in May

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) has raised the price of Liquid Petroleum Gas for the second month running, setting the May 2026 rate at US$1.95 per kilogramme.
The announcement came on Thursday and marks another step up after April’s increase to US$1.85/kg. That was already a jump from the March price of US$1.56/kg, meaning LPG has risen by 39 cents per kilogramme in just two months.
According to ZERA, the adjustments are being made in line with the Petroleum (Liquid Petroleum Gas Pricing) Regulations, Statutory Instrument 90 of 2021.
The regulations allow the regulator to set maximum prices based on market conditions, while still giving operators flexibility to sell below the official cap if their costs allow.
In its notice, ZERA reminded retailers to clearly display the approved prices at their outlets in a prominent and legible format. The authority also clarified that selling LPG below the prescribed price is permitted.
The back-to-back increases are likely to put more pressure on households and small businesses that rely on gas for cooking and heating, especially as many already face rising costs for basic goods and electricity.
