The Tsholotsho community commemorated World Donkey Day yesterday ,alongside the official opening of a private veterinary surgery aimed at improving animal welfare and strengthening rural livelihoods.

The facility, built in 2025, is operated by Working Animals International (WAI), formerly known as SPANA, in partnership with Aware Trust. It features consultation rooms, a theatre, dog cages, donkey stables, a circular exercise area, and a harness sewing room.

According to a post by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Nick Mangwana on X, the celebrations were attended by veterinary officials and WAI Chief Executive Officer Linda Edwards, who praised the important role donkeys play in agriculture, transport, and companionship within rural communities.

WAI currently operates mobile donkey clinics in Nkunzi and Sipepa villages while also running school clubs that educate children on donkey care during floods and drought periods.

WAI Country Director Keith Dutlow said including donkeys on the stock register is a significant step towards sustainable development and recognising the contribution of working animals to rural economies.

The Tsholotsho Rural District Council described the initiative as a positive shift in mindset towards resilience, inclusion, and improved animal welfare.
