Written by on August 19, 2024

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared the spread of mpox in Africa a global health emergency, warning that the virus could soon spread across international borders.

This announcement was made by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus after an emergency committee meeting. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had already declared mpox a public health emergency on the continent.

So far, there have been over 14,000 cases and 524 deaths in Africa this year, surpassing last year’s numbers. Notably, the Democratic Republic of Congo accounts for over 96% of cases and deaths.

Scientists are concerned about a new variant in the DRC that may be more contagious. The WHO’s declaration highlights the urgent need for global action to contain the outbreak and prevent its spread.
