Victoria Falls Nears Completion of Phase One in US$15 Million WASH Upgrade

Written by on May 8, 2025

The Victoria Falls City Council is on the verge of completing the first phase of its Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programme, marking a major step toward addressing long-standing water challenges in the resort city.

The progress comes as government this week approved minimum service delivery standards (MSDS) for local authorities, aimed at ensuring consistent access to essential services, including water supply.

In alignment with these standards, Victoria Falls has advanced efforts to modernise its WASH infrastructure. A newly reconfigured 12-kilometre pipeline, shifting from direct pumping to a gravity-fed system, is currently undergoing testing. Water is expected to start flowing through the system by mid-May, with residents set to benefit from improved supply reliability.

Launched in June 2023, the WASH initiative is part of a broader US$15 million investment targeting infrastructure expansion. The ongoing phase one, valued at US$4.8 million, is scheduled for completion by June 30 and includes reservoir upgrades and the development of a fully operational pump station.

The project has received strong support from tourism stakeholders, who view improved water infrastructure as critical to the city’s international standing. Enhanced sanitation services are expected to bolster the quality of service delivery, positioning Victoria Falls to maintain its appeal as a premier global destination.

As the city continues to attract visitors from across the world, the WASH programme represents a strategic investment in both public health and the sustainability of the tourism industry.
