The United States of America (USA) has launched a new commercial diplomacy strategy for Africa, marking a shift from traditional development assistance to fostering increased trade and investment.
Ambassador Troy Fitrell, Senior Bureau Official for the Bureau of African Affairs, announced the new approach, emphasizing that Africa is now seen as a “capable commercial partner” rather than a continent in need of handouts.
Ambassador Fitrell stated that the new strategy aims to boost U.S. exports and investment in Africa, eliminate trade deficits, and drive mutual prosperity.
He added that the U.S. will also work with African governments to implement market reforms, prioritize key infrastructure projects that attract U.S. businesses. He highlighted that efforts will be made to connect more U.S. companies and capital to African opportunities and advocate for reforms in U.S. trade promotion and financing tools.
Ambassador Fitrell further urged U.S. companies to engage more in African markets and called on African partners to create enabling business environments and consider the long-term value of American goods and services.
