UNICEF Zimbabwe Rallies Youth in Victoria Falls to Tackle Plastic Pollution on World Environment Day

Written by on June 12, 2025

In a vibrant show of youth activism, children in Victoria Falls marched 5km to Chamabondo Primary School as part of delayed World Environment Day commemorations, joining a global call to “Beat Plastic Pollution.”

Organised by UNICEF Zimbabwe, the event spotlighted the country’s mounting plastic crisis, with over 300,000 tonnes of plastic waste produced annually. The initiative aimed to raise awareness of the environmental and health risks posed by plastic pollution, especially to children, who are most vulnerable to its long-term effects.

Speaking on behalf of UNICEF Zimbabwe’s Manager of Development and Humanitarian Programs, Carlos Vasquez highlighted the urgent need for collective action. “Pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss are deeply interconnected — and they continue to disproportionately impact children. We must act decisively to protect their future,” he said.

Delivering a passionate address, Child Minister of Education and Hwange West MP, Hon. Hansel Poloso Dube, called on students and communities to reject single-use plastics and embrace sustainable habits. “It starts with us — saying no to plastic and yes to a cleaner, greener Zimbabwe,” he urged.

World Environment Day, commemorated globally on June 5, serves as the United Nations’ flagship campaign to drive awareness and action for environmental protection. This year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” echoes a critical message: the time to change is now.
