Trump Heads to China for Key Trade Talks with Xi Jinping

China has confirmed that United States President Donald Trump will visit the country from 13 to 15 May for talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping amid ongoing tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
The visit will be the first by a US president to China in nearly a decade and comes as both countries attempt to maintain a fragile trade truce following months of escalating tariff disputes. Executives from major American companies including Boeing, Citigroup and Qualcomm are expected to accompany Trump during the visit.
In April 2025, Trump introduced sweeping import tariffs that triggered a trade war between the US and China, with both nations imposing tariffs exceeding 100 percent on each other’s goods. The tariffs were later paused after Trump and Xi met in South Korea in October, although tensions have continued between the two governments.
China has faced growing economic pressure from the trade dispute due to its heavy dependence on exports to the American market.
Former US President Joe Biden also maintained many of Trump’s tariffs after taking office in 2021 as part of efforts to limit China’s growth in technology and manufacturing sectors.
