Supreme Court Confirms 6-Year Jail Term for Judicial Bribery Scam

Written by on May 22, 2025

The Supreme Court has upheld both the conviction and six-year jail sentence of Alex Tombe for his role in a high-profile judicial bribery scandal.

Tombe was convicted for facilitating a US$20,000 bribe meant to influence the sentencing of convicted gold smuggler Henrietta Rushwaya.

The scam involved legal practitioner Progress Maringamoyo, who remains at large, and former prosecutor Pardon Dziva, who demanded the bribe. The matter was reported to the Police Anti-Corruption Unit by Rushwaya’s sister, Helliate.

A trap was set, and Tombe was arrested after receiving US$10,000 in marked notes at Kebab Restaurant in Harare.

Tombe received six years, Dziva was sentenced to 10, and the court ruled that Tombe’s actions clearly showed knowledge and intent.
