Security guard charged with arson after market fire

A security guard, Action Chakauya (35), has been charged with negligently causing serious damage to property after allegedly starting a fire that destroyed the Mbare Musika Retail Market.
The incident occurred on October 8th when Chakauya was on duty at a premises opposite the market.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, he started a small fire near the precast wall outside the market to warm himself, but the fire quickly spread out of control, engulfing the entire market.The fire caused an estimated $US5 million in damages.
Chakauya was arrested following police investigations and appeared before the Mbare Magistrates’ Court. He was remanded in custody and will appear today for a bail ruling.
