The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has moved to calm public concerns regarding the availability and usage of the new local currency, ZiG, particularly in areas outside of Harare.
In a statement, RBZ assured the transacting public that ZiG cash availability has improved lately.
According to the Reserve Bank, the proportion of local currency settlements on the National Payment System has seen a substantial increase, rising from ZiG7.86 billion (26%) in April 2024 to ZiG56.8 billion (43%) by May 30, 2025.
The RBZ also confirmed that it has been actively disbursing adequate ZiG cash to banks to meet demand. As of June 12, 2025, the total ZiG deposits in the economy stood at ZiG16 billion, with ZiG207 million specifically held by banks.
The Reserve Bank stated that this amount meets optimal requirements and is sufficient to support daily deposits and withdrawals by the public.
In an effort to enhance access, the RBZ, in collaboration with banking institutions, has implemented measures to ensure broader availability and distribution of ZiG cash through bank branches and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). The central bank noted that some banks have already enabled ZiG cash withdrawals through their ATMs, with others in the process of configuring theirs to dispense ZiG.
The Reserve Bank highlighted that the current currency and exchange stability, coupled with ongoing government measures to boost the usage of ZiG, will lead to an increased adoption of the local currency in both electronic and physical forms.
