Written by on March 26, 2025

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has retired Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Commander, Lieutenant-General Anselem Nhamo Sanyatwe, and appointed him as the new Minister of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture, with immediate effect.

Sanyatwe takes over from Dr. Kirsty Coventry, who was relieved of her ministerial duties following her election as President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Coventry is set to assume office on June 23 at the IOC headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.

A seasoned military leader, Sanyatwe played a crucial role in Zimbabwe’s liberation war and post-independence military operations, steadily rising through the ranks to become ZNA Commander. His career also includes diplomatic experience, having previously served as Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to Tanzania.

His appointment aligns with Section 104(3) of the Constitution, following his retirement under Sections 216(2), 340(1)(f), and 115 of the Defence Act.

Sanyatwe’s transition from military leadership to a ministerial role marks a strategic shift in his career, as he now takes on the task of overseeing Zimbabwe’s sports, arts, and cultural development.
