Written by on July 23, 2024

President Emerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa recently launched the Gukurahundi initiative in Bulawayo aimed at helping communities come to terms with their past and move forward.

The program seeks to create a platform for people to share their experiences and find ways to heal and overcome the trauma of Gukurahundi.

The initiative encourages communities to exchange stories and experiences, freeing them from the stigma associated with this dark period in Gukurahundi’s history. The president said by doing so, the program aims to help the nation move forward, no longer held back by the bitter past.

The launch of the initiative has received widespread support, with Hwedza North legislator Honourable Itai Ndudzo applauding the president’s program as a significant step towards healing and reconciliation.

Gukurahundi resulted in the deaths of approximately 20,000 people. The signing of the Unity Accord in 1983 brought an end to the violence. The Gukurahundi initiative marks a crucial step towards addressing this painful history and promoting national healing.
