President Emmerson Mnangagwa has departed for Namibia this morning to attend the memorial service and burial of the late founding President of Namibia, Dr. Samuel Daniel Nujoma.

The President left from Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in Harare and is expected to be one of the key speakers at the memorial service. Dr. Nujoma will be buried at Namibia’s Heroes Acre in Windhoek.

Dr. Nujoma, who passed away on February 8 at the age of 95, was a prominent figure in Namibia’s struggle for independence. He founded SWAPO in 1960 and led the armed resistance against apartheid South Africa from 1966. As Namibia’s first president, he served from 1990 to 2005 and played a pivotal role in building one of the region’s most stable economies.

A staunch advocate for women’s rights, Dr. Nujoma worked tirelessly to preserve national stability and attract international support for the country’s development.

His legacy is honored globally with prestigious awards, including the Lenin Peace Prize, the Indira Gandhi Peace Prize, and the Ho Chi Minh Peace Prize. In 2005, the Namibian parliament officially recognized him as the “Founding Father of Namibia” in acknowledgment of his significant contributions.
