Written by Staff Reporter on April 22, 2025
Pope Francis, who passed away yesterday at the age of 88, will be laid to rest at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, becoming the first pope in over a century to be buried outside the traditional Vatican tombs.
In a statement released by the Vatican, Camerlengo Cardinal Kevin Farrell confirmed that the Pope died at 07:35 a.m. on Sunday at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, following complications from a recent lung infection. He had been discharged from hospital weeks earlier but continued to struggle with respiratory issues.
The decision to bury him at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major is significant. Known for his deep devotion to the Virgin Mary, Pope Francis frequently visited the basilica throughout his papacy, especially before and after major trips.
The Pope made his final public appearance during Easter Sunday celebrations at St. Peter’s Square, where he delivered the traditional blessing while in a wheelchair due to ongoing knee problems.
Elected in 2013, Pope Francis led the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years. His legacy includes outspoken advocacy for the poor, marginalized communities, environmental stewardship, and church reform.
The Vatican has indicated that full funeral details will be released in due course.
