Namibia to Scrap University Tuition Fees in 2026 to Boost Access to Education

Namibia is set to eliminate tuition and registration fees at all public universities and technical colleges starting in 2026, as part of a new policy aimed at expanding access to higher education and strengthening the country’s human capital base.
The announcement was made during President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s first State of the Nation Address on Tuesday. The policy will apply to all Namibian citizens enrolled in undergraduate programmes at state-owned tertiary institutions. However, students will still be expected to cover their own accommodation and living expenses.
The move follows sustained advocacy by student organisations and civil society groups pushing for affordable education. It also reflects a broader regional push to address the challenges of rising education costs and youth unemployment.
Authorities view the decision as a long-term investment in national development, with expectations that improved access to higher education will help drive innovation, economic growth, and social equity.
