The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) Hwange Power Station has been hit by a major technical fault after Unit 2 suffered a tube leak on May 5, 2025.
Acting Minister of Energy and Power Development, Hon. Jenfan Muswere, provided an update on the country’s power situation, revealing that abnormal water chemistry had been detected around the time of the incident. Elevated conductivity and low pH levels suggested acidic contamination.
Investigations have since traced the source of the contamination to the water treatment plant. The failure affected all units at the station, resulting in an emergency shutdown.
Minister Muswere said repairs are progressing well, with all five affected units expected to be fully operational by the end of the day on May 9, 2025.
