Matabeleland North Prisons Step Up HIV Response

Zimbabwe’s correctional facilities in Matabeleland North are strengthening HIV prevention, testing and treatment services for inmates as authorities work towards achieving national HIV control targets.

Speaking during a stakeholder meeting organised by the Matabeleland North National AIDS Council in Bulawayo yesterday, Matabeleland North Assistant Principal Correctional Officer Godknows Ncube said eight correctional institutions in the province are providing HIV services to inmates.

Ncube said 144 inmates were tested and counselled for HIV during the period under review, with 104 inmates currently living with HIV.

Ncube noted that prisons in the province have recorded encouraging health outcomes, including the absence of tuberculosis and hepatitis cases among inmates.

Authorities are also intensifying HIV education programmes inside correctional facilities to encourage voluntary testing and ensure inmates know their HIV status.

Ncube said inmate-led peer support groups are also playing a key role in improving treatment adherence and reducing stigma.
