As the world commemorates Human Rights Day today under the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” the Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding human rights as the bedrock of justice, equality, and dignity.
This day coincides with the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a global campaign to eradicate violence against women and girls, one of the most widespread human rights violations.
In a statement, LRF emphasized that human rights are not merely ideals but practical tools for building a fair and inclusive society and they act as a preventative measure, establishing universal values and principles that deter violations, conflicts, and abuses before they occur.
LRF applauded government’s commitment to human rights which is evident in its protective legislation, including the Domestic Violence Act, the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, and the Trafficking in Persons Act but however, stressed the need for enhanced implementation and increased public awareness to fully realize the potential of these laws.
Despite progress, gender-based violence remains a serious issue in Zimbabwe. Shockingly, approximately one in three women aged 15 to 49 have experienced physical violence, and one in four have faced sexual violence since adolescence.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reported a staggering 16,444 cases of gender-based violence against women from January to October 2023. Tragically, 31 women were killed by their intimate partners during this period, a disturbing increase from 26 deaths in 2022.
