The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe (MSD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and potential flooding for Matebeleland South, with Bulawayo and parts of the Midlands also expected to receive rain.
In a joint statement, the MSD and the Department of Civil Protection indicated that rainfall exceeding 70mm is anticipated between today and tomorrow the 20th of February.
The Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has urged the public to exercise extreme caution, warning of the risks of flash floods, flooding of streams and rivers, and increased lightning activity.
Bulawayo CPU chairperson Tswagai Fikile Morovatsanga emphasized the importance of staying away from flooded waterways, particularly keeping children safe from these dangers.
The heavy rains have already taken a tragic toll across the country, with 40 lives lost in weather-related incidents. In Bulawayo, three people have drowned since the start of the 2024/25 rainy season, including a three-year-old child swept away by a flooded stream in Emakhandeni.
