The government has unveiled a comprehensive livestock recovery and resilience strategy aimed at addressing the persistent challenges of drought and livestock disease, particularly in Matebeleland.

Chief Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Advisory Services (ARDAS), Leonard Munamati, revealed that the initiative prioritizes climate-smart breeding techniques to develop drought-tolerant livestock breeds.

Munamati noted that this innovative approach is designed to empower livestock farmers in Matebeleland, enabling them to build a more sustainable and resilient livestock sector. The plan also seeks to mitigate the impact of climate change on the region’s agricultural output.

Key measures under the initiative include the provision of reliable water sources, the establishment of drought mitigation centers, the promotion of household feed and fodder banks, and capacity-building programs to equip farmers with essential skills and knowledge.
