Govt establishes Food Advisory Board to Ensute Food Safety

The government has taken steps to ensure food safety in the country. The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora announced that the government has set up a Food Advisory Board in addition to implementing other measures and statutory instruments.
The 16-member board, established under the Food and Food Standards Act, will play a crucial role in ensuring the availability of safe and quality products for consumers. Dr. Mombeshora urged the board to work closely with other government departments to protect consumers from unsafe food and to help farmers and food manufacturers export their products to earn much-needed foreign currency.
The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Rose Mpofu acknowledged the challenges the country is facing with counterfeit products on the market. Stating that food is a matter of life and death and counterfeit food products pose a big danger to the public.
The Food Advisory Board will be chaired by Mr. Panganayi Hare of the Law Society of Zimbabwe and comprises members from various organizations and stakeholders with a vested interest in food safety control.
