Written by on January 8, 2025

The government has approved the privatization of water supply systems to address longstanding urban water challenges, particularly in Bulawayo and Harare. This move is expected to bring significant relief to residents who have endured inadequate water supply for years.

According to the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Daniel Garwe, five proposals from private sector players have already been submitted. The selection process is underway, with progress anticipated by late January or early February 2025.

The privatization initiative will encompass the entire water value chain, including purification, distribution, billing, and metering. Additionally, the government plans to replace old meters with smart water metering systems.

In Bulawayo and Harare, efforts will also focus on upgrading infrastructure, including the implementation of leak detection systems to improve efficiency.
