The Government has launched the National Health Strategy (NHS) 2026–2030, a comprehensive blueprint designed to strengthen Zimbabwe’s healthcare system, expand access to quality medical services and improve health outcomes for all citizens.
Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora officially unveiled the strategy, describing it as a critical roadmap that will guide the country’s efforts to build a resilient, efficient and people-centred health sector over the next five years.
The strategy prioritises reducing illness and deaths caused by both communicable and non-communicable diseases, improving maternal, newborn and child health, and ensuring the consistent availability of medicines and other essential health commodities across the country.
A key pillar of the plan is increasing domestic health financing, with Government targeting health expenditure of at least 15 percent of total national spending in line with regional and international commitments. The strategy also seeks to address human resource gaps through the creation of 32,000 new health sector posts by 2030.
To improve service delivery, Government will accelerate the upgrading of health infrastructure and expand access to healthcare services at both primary and specialist levels, particularly in underserved communities.
The National Health Strategy places strong emphasis on digital transformation, with plans to connect all health facilities to the internet and integrate health information systems nationwide. The initiative is expected to enhance efficiency, strengthen health data management, improve planning and support better patient care.
In addition, the strategy outlines measures to strengthen governance, accountability and performance monitoring through a robust results-based management framework aimed at ensuring effective implementation and measurable outcomes.
The launch of the National Health Strategy 2026–2030 marks a significant step in Zimbabwe’s drive towards achieving universal health coverage, building a modern healthcare system and ensuring equitable access to quality health services for all citizens.
