# FORMER ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT EDGAR LUNGU PASSES AWAY IN SOUTH AFRICA

LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – June 5, 2025 – Zambia is in mourning following the death of its sixth President, Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu. The former head of state passed away today, Thursday, June 5th, 2025, at Mediclinic Medforum Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa, where he had been undergoing specialized medical treatment.

The news was confirmed by his daughter, Hon. Tasila Lungu-Mwansa, the Member of Parliament for Chawama. The family’s lawyer, Hon. Makebi Zulu, also verified the former President’s passing, adding that the process of informing all family members was currently underway.

Dr. Lungu served as the Sixth Republican President of Zambia from January 26th, 2015, until August 24th, 2021. His tenure marked a significant period in the nation’s recent history.

The Patriotic Front (PF), the party under which Dr. Lungu led the nation, issued an official statement announcing his demise. The statement, released by the party’s Acting President, Hon. Given Lubinda, expressed profound sorrow at the loss.

“The Patriotic Front and the nation at large have lost a dedicated leader and servant,” the statement read. “We extend our deepest condolences to the Lungu family during this difficult time.”

Details regarding funeral arrangements for the former President are expected to be communicated to the public at a later date. The nation awaits further information as it comes to terms with the loss of its former leader.
