Deadly Ebola Surge in DR Congo Sparks Regional Health Emergency

Written by on May 19, 2026

A rapidly escalating Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has killed at least 131 people, with authorities recording more than 513 suspected cases as the deadly virus spreads across multiple regions of the country.

Health officials warn that the outbreak is expanding beyond initially affected areas, heightening fears of wider transmission and placing regional health systems on high alert.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the crisis an international emergency after confirming that the outbreak is being driven by the highly dangerous Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. The declaration has triggered intensified global and local containment efforts aimed at preventing further spread.

Concerns over cross-border transmission have also deepened after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed two Ebola infections and one related death in neighbouring Uganda linked to the DR Congo outbreak.

Authorities in DR Congo say emergency response teams are actively tracing contacts, isolating suspected infections, and carrying out investigations in affected communities as part of urgent efforts to contain the disease.

The latest outbreak has renewed alarm over the recurring threat of Ebola epidemics in Central and East Africa, particularly in regions facing fragile healthcare infrastructure, limited medical resources, and difficult access to affected communities.

Health experts say rapid surveillance, stronger border monitoring, and coordinated international intervention will be critical in containing the outbreak and preventing a broader humanitarian and public health crisis across the region.
