AfDB Injects US$4 Million Into Zimbabwe’s Debt Clearance and Global Re-engagement Efforts

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) has approved a US$4 million grant for Zimbabwe’s arrears clearance and international re-engagement programme, providing fresh momentum to the country’s drive to restore ties with global financial institutions and creditors.
The funding, channelled through the Zimbabwe Arrears Clearance Dialogue Enhancement Project (ZACDEP), is expected to strengthen reform negotiations and accelerate efforts to resolve Zimbabwe’s longstanding debt obligations.
The latest financial support comes as Zimbabwe intensifies its push to normalise relations with international lenders, unlock concessional financing, and rebuild investor confidence after years of economic isolation.
Authorities say the grant will bolster high-level policy dialogue and support broader economic reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, attracting foreign direct investment, and laying the foundation for sustainable growth.
Zimbabwe’s total public debt was estimated at approximately US$21.5 billion by the end of 2025, including nearly US$11.7 billion in external debt, highlighting the scale and urgency of the country’s debt resolution agenda.
The AfDB’s intervention is widely being viewed as a strong vote of confidence in Zimbabwe’s commitment to economic reform and re-engagement, with arrears clearance now emerging as a key pillar in the country’s strategy to reintegrate into the global financial system.
Officials believe progress in debt resolution could open the door to renewed development financing, expanded international cooperation, and stronger economic recovery prospects for Zimbabwe.
