On Saturday, March 22, 2025, WWF Zimbabwe, in partnership with Friends of the Environment, Forestry Commission, Environmental Management Agency, and other conservation-driven organizations, hosted the Earth Hour 2025 celebration at Chidobe in Hwange District.
This year’s theme, “Give an Hour for Water,” emphasized the importance of protecting the planet’s precious water resources. The event aimed to inspire individuals to spend 60 minutes doing something positive for the environment, highlighting the significance of wetlands and biodiversity conservation.
The celebration drew together members of the Chidobe community, Hwange and Victoria Falls partners, stakeholders, school children, and Scouts from Victoria Falls. The event showcased the power of collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
As part of the reforestation efforts, WWF Zimbabwe engaged in building a dam in collaboration with Chidobe women. This initiative demonstrates the organization’s commitment to community-led conservation projects and sustainable livelihoods.
During the event, Mrs. Banda expressed her heartfelt appreciation for the Chidobe community women, saying, “I appreciate you all and for the collaboration in successfully working together in desilting our dam. Now, let’s work together in protecting our dam and our water.” Her words emphasized the importance of community involvement and cooperation in environmental conservation.
The CEO of Hwange District Council, Mr. P Ncube, shared sentiments and encouraged community members to protect and utilize the natural resources for their benefit. He said, “This project does not belong to WWF; it belongs to you, the community members. Utilize it, make an income from it, and uplift your livelihoods. All we can say is thank you to WWF for this fortune.” His remarks underscored the importance of community ownership and sustainable management of natural resources.
Earth Hour is a global movement that encourages individuals, communities, and organizations to take action against climate change and environmental degradation. By hosting this event, WWF Zimbabwe and its partners reaffirmed their dedication to protecting Zimbabwe’s natural heritage for future generations.
As the world comes together to address the pressing issues of climate change, conservation, and sustainability, the Earth Hour 2025 celebration in Zimbabwe serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of collective action in driving positive change.
Held every year on the last Saturday of March, Earth Hour engages millions of people in more than 180 countries and territories, taking part in activities to show support for our planet.
