Chief Justice Gwaunza Rallies Judiciary to Uphold Integrity Amid Growing Public Scrutiny

Zimbabwe’s Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza has urged judges and legal practitioners to remain resolute in defending judicial independence, integrity, and professionalism as public scrutiny of the justice system intensifies.

Speaking on the critical role of the judiciary in protecting democracy and the rule of law, Chief Justice Gwaunza said judicial officers must administer justice fairly, impartially, and without fear, regardless of criticism, political pressure, or allegations from dissatisfied litigants.

She cautioned against allowing public opinion or external influence to shape court decisions, stressing that judges are constitutionally obligated to base their rulings strictly on the law, evidence presented before the courts, and principles of justice.

The Chief Justice acknowledged that legal disputes naturally produce winners and losers, often triggering accusations and criticism against members of the bench. However, she said such reactions should never weaken the independence, credibility, or authority of the judiciary.

Chief Justice Gwaunza called on judicial officers to carry out their duties with courage, ethical discipline, and confidence, adding that judges must remain guided by the law and a clear conscience in delivering sound and balanced judgments.

Her remarks come amid growing national attention on judicial accountability and governance, with the courts increasingly seen as a vital pillar in safeguarding constitutional order, democratic values, and public trust in Zimbabwe’s justice system.
