The African Union (AU) has condemned the killing of South Sudanese nationals in Wad Madani. AU Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat called for an immediate halt to the killings, following South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir’s declaration of a state of emergency on 17 January.
Mahamat expressed his condolences to the victims’ families, the South Sudanese government, and citizens, urging restraint to prevent further violence. He also appealed to international organizations to help end the crisis, as over 24,000 South Sudanese have been killed and millions displaced.
Meanwhile, post-election violence continues in Mozambique, after President Daniel Chapo’s inauguration following his 2024 election victory.
