A spate of recent accidents on Bulawayo’s roads has claimed five lives, prompting a warning from police for road users to exercise extreme caution.
Between July 26 and August 5, 2024, five pedestrians were killed in separate incidents involving vehicles on Minya Road, Luveve Road, and Nketa Drive.
The accidents, which involved trucks, cars, pedestrians, and a cyclist, were attributed to failure to stop at robots and pedestrian crossings. Another incident occurred on August 5, where a 27-year-old woman driving a Fortuner hit a cyclist on Nketa Drive and fled the scene before later surrendering to police. She is set to face charges for culpable homicide.
Bulawayo Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube noted that Luveve Road and Nketa Drive have the highest recorded road accidents, warning drivers to avoid excessive speeding.
Speaking on the same light in a separate interview with Skyz Metro FM’s news reporter Effort Moyo, Givemore Mapfumo a local motorists highlighted that over-speeding contributes to most preventable accidents.
The recent surge in accidents has raised concerns about road safety, with authorities urging all road users to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent further tragedies.
