Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has commended Zimbabwe’s governance strides, despite persistent economic challenges, following reports from the World Justice Project and the Ibrahim Index of African Governance.
Speaking at the High-Level Structured Dialogue on Zimbabwe’s National Debt Resolution in Harare on 26 November 2024, Dr. Adesina acknowledged Zimbabwe’s progress in key governance areas but pointed out that the latest reports indicate a lack of significant improvement in crucial governance indices.
The dialogue, chaired by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, brought together government officials, creditors, development partners, and representatives from civil society and the private sector to discuss Zimbabwe’s debt clearance efforts. The focus was on strategies to unlock financing to achieve the country’s Vision 2030 objectives.
Zimbabwe’s debt burden remains a major obstacle to securing external financing, but the government has developed a strategy that includes negotiations with creditors and economic reforms aimed at improving fiscal and governance performance.
