The Government has underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships between universities and industry, describing collaboration between academia and the productive sector as a key driver of Zimbabwe’s industrialisation, innovation agenda and economic transformation.

Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, Simelisizwe Sibanda, said closer engagement between academic institutions and industry is essential to ensure that research, innovation and graduate skills are aligned with national development priorities and the needs of the economy.

He expressed confidence in the quality of Zimbabwean graduates, noting that they continue to compete successfully on the global stage. The Deputy Minister challenged local industries to place greater trust in locally trained professionals while deepening collaboration with universities to develop practical solutions to production and operational challenges through research-driven innovation.

Sibanda highlighted the growing impact of innovation hubs, industrial parks, technology transfer offices and business incubation centres established across higher and tertiary education institutions, saying these platforms are fostering entrepreneurship, accelerating value addition and strengthening the connection between knowledge generation and commercial production.

He said the initiatives are helping to transform universities into engines of economic growth by promoting the commercialisation of research, supporting start-up enterprises and creating opportunities for industry-led innovation.

According to Sibanda, enhanced cooperation between academia and industry will be instrumental in developing a future-ready workforce equipped to thrive in the era of Industry 5.0, while advancing technological development, increasing industrial competitiveness and supporting the attainment of Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 development aspirations.

The Government views stronger academia-industry linkages as a strategic pathway towards building an innovation-driven economy capable of creating jobs, boosting productivity and delivering sustainable economic growth.
