VICTORIA FALLS, Zimbabwe – The Fifth General Assembly of the African Public Procurement Network (APPN) has opened at the Elephant Hills resort with a powerful and symbolic gesture, as the Republic of Zimbabwe bestowed a magnificent golden trophy and chain of office upon the Network, establishing a new enduring symbol of Pan-African unity and purpose.
In a moving welcome address, the APPN President, Dr. C. Ruswa, presented the gift to the assembly, declaring it “The Symbol of Our Convening.” The stunning artefact features a golden map of Africa, encircled by the vibrant flags of every APPN member state.
“This is more than a trophy. It is a mirror. It reflects our core identity,” Dr. Ruswa told the gathered dignitaries, senior government officials, and international partners. “Towering majestically is the map of Africa, which reminds us of our shared destiny and the continental scale of our mission.”
The presentation, which Dr. Ruswa described as a “historic act of generosity and symbolism,” perfectly aligns with the Assembly’s theme: “Transforming Public Procurement in Africa through Innovation, Inclusion, Sustainability, and Regional Collaboration.”
Dr. Ruswa elaborated on the profound meaning behind each element of the gift. The prominent map of Africa symbolises interconnected progress and a tangible commitment to regional collaboration under frameworks like the African Continental Free Trade Area. The flags of all member states, placed on the back of the trophy, were highlighted as a “powerful declaration of inclusion.”
“They announce that while we are proud of our individual nations, here, in this Assembly, we are one,” he stated. “No single flag towers above another; they stand in equality, collaboration, and mutual respect.”
The accompanying chain of office represents the sacred trust placed in the Network’s leadership. It is intended to be worn by the sitting APPN Chairperson as a physical reminder of their responsibility to “lead with integrity and serve with dedication.”
Crucially, the chain is designed to be passed on. At the end of each term, the outgoing chairperson will place the chain on the incoming leader, symbolising a peaceful and continuous transition.
“This simple, powerful act will symbolise the… perpetual life of our Network,” Dr. Ruswa explained. “It ensures that the flame of our shared vision is never extinguished, but rather passed from one hand to the next, growing brighter with each succession.”
Henceforth, the presence of the trophy in a conference room will serve as the official confirmation that the APPN’s supreme governing body is in session. The Secretary General of the APPN will now use the symbol to formally open each General Assembly.
“May this trophy travel across our continent,” Dr. Ruswa concluded. “And may every leader who wears this chain be inspired to lead with the same unity, purpose, and Pan-African spirit that it represents.”
The gift from Zimbabwe is expected to become a cherished tradition, anchoring the work of the APPN for generations to come as the Assembly now turns its focus to critical discussions on digital innovation, inclusive practices, and sustainable development.
