Fresh US Strikes on Southern Iran Cast Shadow Over Ceasefire Efforts

The United States has launched fresh military strikes on targets in southern Iran, escalating tensions at a critical moment as diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire between Washington and Tehran continue amid fragile hopes for de-escalation.

According to the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes targeted missile launch sites and boats allegedly attempting to deploy naval mines in strategic waters, actions the US military said posed an imminent threat to American personnel and regional security.

CENTCOM said the operation was undertaken in self-defence, stressing that the strikes were aimed at neutralising immediate threats posed by Iranian-linked forces while safeguarding US troops stationed in the region.

Speaking on the latest developments, CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins said the United States remains committed to defending its personnel while exercising restraint during the ongoing ceasefire period, insisting that the military action should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from diplomatic engagement.

The renewed offensive comes at a particularly sensitive stage in relations between the two adversaries, with negotiations reportedly continuing through diplomatic channels in pursuit of a broader agreement to end months of hostilities and restore regional stability.

Iran had not officially responded to the strikes at the time of reporting. However, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqai acknowledged that discussions aimed at resolving the conflict had made progress, while cautioning that no final agreement had yet been reached.

The latest escalation has cast fresh uncertainty over prospects for peace, with analysts warning that continued military confrontations risk undermining delicate diplomatic momentum and further destabilising an already volatile geopolitical landscape.

As ceasefire negotiations remain ongoing, international attention is increasingly focused on whether both nations can prevent further escalation and steer the conflict toward a sustainable diplomatic resolution.
