National Sports Stadium Poised for Historic Return with Operational Test Match

The long-awaited return of football action to Zimbabwe’s iconic National Sports Stadium is set to take a major step forward, with the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture announcing an Operational Test Match scheduled for May 31 as part of efforts to assess the facility’s readiness for full reopening.

In a statement, the ministry said the high-stakes exercise will serve as a critical assessment of the stadium’s operational capacity following extensive renovations aimed at restoring the venue to international standards.

Authorities will use the test event to evaluate key areas essential for hosting major sporting events, including crowd management systems, safety and security protocols, seating arrangements, pitch quality, access control and the overall functionality of the refurbished facility.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) and the Zimbabwe Football Association are expected to announce the participating teams in the coming days, with anticipation already building among football fans eager to witness the stadium’s revival.

Government has called on supporters to attend the landmark occasion in large numbers, describing the test match as a significant milestone in the country’s drive to modernise and restore critical sporting infrastructure.

The National Sports Stadium, once the heartbeat of Zimbabwean football, has undergone extensive upgrades, including the installation of modern bucket seats, improved playing surfaces and enhanced spectator amenities designed to elevate the match-day experience while aligning the venue with international sporting requirements.

The Operational Test Match is expected to provide a crucial indication of the stadium’s preparedness to once again host premier domestic and international fixtures, marking what many hope will be the beginning of a new era for Zimbabwean sport.
